A year on from launching madelocal.app on social media we have opened a Trustpilot account. Why? To collect independent and verified reviews, which are a vital element for building a successful brand.

Reviews are important to us as the owners of madelocal.app as well as the community of people who work hard to sell their handmade items on the site. We all have a vested interest in growing the brand and making it a success. The web pages get hundreds of views every day and brand awareness is the key to turning site visitors into buyers. It isn’t just us saying this – research by Hubspot (2021) shows that 90% of shoppers read online reviews before visiting a business or making a purchase. According to Forbes, a strong brand will get and keep people’s attention. With a huge amount of competition, brand and recognition of madelocal.app is key. Branding can also help build trust and eventually, loyal customers.

Think of reviews as a way of getting your customers to do your marketing for you! Reviews generate more reviews. No one likes to be the first, but customers will be encouraged to leave feedback if they can see that others are doing so. The appearance of just a few reviews will be enough to give new customers the confidence to share their experience with others.

How you can help!

  • 01. You’ve got to give to get. If you have not already done so, find madelocal on Trustpilot and give it a review worthy of attracting new customers.
  • 02. Put your reviews at centre of your marketing. If you have received customer reviews through madelocal – share snippets of them regularly on social media with a link back to the item to drive more sales.
  • 03. Follow up with your customers. Put a thank-you note in with every order and tell the customer how grateful you would be of a review on madelocal.app.
  • 04. Reward those who review and create customer loyalty by offering a discount on their next purchase as an incentive to give a review. See the Promo section of your dashboard for details of how to do this.

Through reviews we can learn and improve. What is it about the product that the customer likes? If you knew that, it could help you market it to others. Maybe it solves an issue you hadn’t even thought about! By asking customers for a review you are saying that you value their opinion and you care about what they have to say. When a customer feels important to you, it builds loyalty like nothing else.

Still can’t see what’s in it for you? Think about it – one of the key aspects of running a successful business is recognising what’s in it for you – and then maximising it. The more that madelocal becomes known, the more people will visit the website, and the more opportunity you have to make a sale. How does madelocal become known? Through reputation. How do you improve reputation? Tell people about your good experiences.

How to describe my role in madelocal.app? I guess you’d say I was the co-pilot or sous chef to Dave as the head of the enterprise. I am the planner, organiser and strategic thinker in the partnership.
